Pair of Painted and Distressed French Regence Style Fauteuil Armchairs, C. 1915

About the Item

One of the most characteristic decor from the Regence period is the coquille, or scalloped shell. Often appearing as central motifs on consoles, tables, and armoires, our pair of Regence style fauteuil armchairs have a large coquille medallion punctuated with attenuated lobes in the center of the sinuous skirts. Hand-carved in France, circa 1915, the beautiful armchairs feature a distressed painted white finish. A neutral linen accentuates the frames, with the a la reine (flat) back, short manchettes, and robust seat cushion featuring an off white upholstery affixed by hundreds of small nailheads. The highly carved crests at the top of the backs are adorned with a palmette center medallion (another hallmark of the Regence). Curled leaves emanate from the sides, forming a highly shaped top rail that terminate in gadrooned leaves at the shoulders, also representative of the style. The roughly trapezoid shaped cushions are flanked by armrests that finish well short of the legs, resting on short arm stumps embellished with a floral cap above an acanthus leaf. Both side rails have a similar arbalete shape as the front skirt, with a central coquille and curled leaves extending in both directions. Four cabriole legs support each fauteuil, terminating in volute feet, with the front legs having a roquillard carving above the feet. This pair of distressed French Regence style fauteuils work well with just about any type of interior design. Given that the Regence was a transitory period between Louis XIV and Louis XV, it works especially well with furniture from those periods. The neutral color also allows the chairs to be placed in any living room, entry hall, or office, without overpowering color palettes of those rooms.

Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Good antique condition with minor age separations. Light wear and discoloration to some areas of the upholstery, but they are in good condition.
