A pair of rare reclining Edwardian armchairs in England c.1910

About the Item

A pair of rare reclining armchairs constructed of oak from the Edwardian period in England c.1910. Please notice the most intriguing aspect of these chairs which is that they are actually able to recline. Behind each of the backs is a slender cylinder of oak that may be moved to three different positions achieving three different angles of recline. The frame of these chairs has quite a modern appearance with squared off timbers of oak providing the vertical support. The decorative aspects of these chairs are apparent in the barley twist seen on the front legs. This name was given to this distinctive carving that resembles the twist on the paper wrappers for a penny candy made from barley sugar. The elements on these chairs are notable because the twists are placed in opposition to each other-meaning the left slopes down to the right and the right slopes down to the left. Lesser quality barley twist slopes in the same direction on both sides. Interestingly the sides of each chair are open cane work that has two advantages. First, it provides ventilation for the flow of air and second, it adds an unexpected textural change from the oak in the frame and the leather on the chair backs. The tall back of each chair is centred on an inverted arch with a bold profile with straight sides. The original leather covering retains its distinctive nail head trim and its burnished colour contrasts handsomely with the pale colour of the bleached oak. The arms of each chair are exceptionally broad and add to the overall comfort. The arms are connected to the flat piece of timber behind each chair back where the adjustable spindles are located. Each chair retains their original casters that still enable them to be wheeled wherever they need to be located for maximum enjoyment. The base of each front leg conceal the casters with a half sphere while the back casters are fully visible. The upholstery on each chair has a firm decking with a generously sized loose cushion placed on top. The oatmeal coloured and imported Belgian linen is highlighted with a row of double welt cord at the base while each cushion has a single welt cord trim. These unusual chairs are perfect for a large family room or bedroom where a stylish pair are needed to create a unique and dynamic space. Because of their combination of materials they speak both a contemporary and traditional language that will be welcoming wherever they are placed.
