Rococo Revival John Jelliff Armchair
An American Rococo Revival bergere or armchair; framed in walnut and burl, button tufted and channel upholstered, with Jelliff's signature silhouette bust centered on its crest rail. Upholstered armchairs of this period were oft made with just frontal casters. John Jelliff was a highly regarded Newark, New Jersey furniture maker. He retired in 1860; a forerunner in revival furniture embellished with classical busts. Jelliff-type 'heads' appeared on both his seating furniture and case pieces; and later on the work of New York City, Philadelphia, and even midwestern masters of fine revival furniture. He did not label his work, yet four different attributed specimen are in the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
