Set of 10 Bent Maple Plywood & Green Armchairs or Dining Chairs by Thonet NYC

About the Item

Designed, manufactured, and distributed in the United States, this set of chairs was produced by Thonet in the early 1960s. Thonet, the company, came to be in the 1850s in Germany, after the founder, Michael Thonet, began to experiment with a revolutionary technique: steam bending. After numerous high-profile designs, including custom pieces for the Court of Vienna, and other pieces being shown in the Brooklyn Museum, Thonet managed to open factories in the United States. First in North Carolina, but later in New York City, which is where these chairs were made. These chairs were made using the most advanced steam processes at the time. Made of bent maple plywood, their construction quality is excellent. The bends are consistent and strong and are held together with tens of screws each. The styling offers subtle design cues, such as the angled and curved panels holding the back, and the forward leaning of the chair. The original green leatherette offers a handsome but playful look and is in great shape considering their age. Signed below, these chairs are small pieces of history of a now iconic time in furniture. You will love these chairs in your home. In very good condition. Normal signs of light use and care.

Chairs listed and sold as a set of (2) It is truly no surprise that this same chair is in the permanent collection at The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Meditate on the genius involved in crafting each chair from a single sheet of layered ply. Cutting and molding a single medium into functional art with a style so timeless, the revival exceeds the debut. Designed by Peter Danko in 1978 and produced by Thonet, all but one chair had their original factory tags underneath. The three tags were gently removed and bagged separately during our restoration. Exquisitely re-upholstered in red-orange weave fabric to harmoniously compliment the honey colored oak frames. Our restoration team spent countless hours touching up the frames. Although a few still remain, most chips and scratches were expertly mitigated before we applied a topcoat to match the original. We're certain these chairs will meet expectations. The chair was gifted to the museum by Lloyd E. Herman, founding director and director emeritus of the Renwick Gallery (1971-1986), in honor of Michael W...
