19th Century Flemish Renaissance Hall Bench

About the Item

19th Century Flemish Renaissance Hall Bench is a truly definitive example of the revival of the Renaissance that occurred in Europe around the time of Napoleon III in France. This example combines an abundance of whimsy, classicism, mythical creatures and symbolism all rendered in bold full relief from the crown to the base. Starting at the top we find a relatively benign crown molding but the fun just starts below. Framed panels on top depict gryffins holding shields surrounded by elaborate acanthus flourishes, while the framed panels immediately below illustrate knights' helmets with a noble family's crest on the shield, also surrounded by acanthus flourishes. Flanking the seat back we find an angelic form on the left topped with a Corinthian capital, and mounted upon a corbel carved with fruit and nuts, while on the right side a warrior showing off his "six pack" and similarly mounted. The corbels lead the eye to the armrests on each side, which are tipped with artfully sculpted smiling lions set upon curved pediments. The seat consists of a trunk lid that opens to reveal surprising storage within, but the ornamentation doesn't stop there! The front panel of the trunk section features dolphins flanking an heraldic crest with floral and foliate embellishments, framed by a brace of whimsical creatures on the corners with mouths agape.
