Walter Papst for Wilkhahn Bench in Green Fiberglass

About the Item

Walter Papst for Wilkhahn, bench, model '1000', fiberglass, Germany, circa 1968 This '1000' garden bench is designed by Walter Papst and features an organic-shaped form executed in a vibrant green-lacquered fiberglass. Owing to its material property, this bench is well-suited for use in any weather conditions. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was an explosion of shapes, colors, and materials in decorative arts. The use of bright colors and plastics in this design places the bench in the Pop Art era, reminiscent of the contemporaneous experimentation of avant-garde sculptors. Designers moved away from traditional production methods towards innovative design techniques. Furniture from the 1960s and 1970s was influenced by advancements in technology, leading to a wider variety of materials being used. Designers began to incorporate new materials, such as inflatable PVC, disposable cardboard, latex and polyester foam, into furniture design. These materials allowed for the creation of soft, organic shapes that promoted relaxation and comfort. Additionally, plastic in various forms, including hard, smooth, and shiny, became popular, as well as intense, fashionable colors. Please be advised that there are certain areas on the bench where the lacquer has faded. Restoration is possible before shipping by our experienced craftsman and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized restoration is possible as well.

Stunning blue fiberglass bench designed by Walter Papst for Wilkhahn, Germany, 1960s. Walter Papst was one of the first European designers to use fiberglass to fabricate furniture. The design of the bench is naive, almost simplistic since it is made out of 1 piece of molded fiberglass. But nonetheless, it is a very sophisticated item because it was made with beautiful slanted angles, which gives it a very sculptural and architectural look. The stunning bright blue color makes it pure eye candy. The blue color is the original color and could be described as 'modernist blue' or 'le corbusier blue...
