About the Item

A rather rare five-legged design, this bergere styled after the Louis XV taste during the Napoleon III period is a finely carved and very rich display. The frame exhibits a certain independence of hand that is always a wonderful thing to examine - each carving along the crest rail is unique and different, even placements being variated and lacking perfect symmetry. The floral carvings are of the best quality, each fully developed and cut deeply and vividly into the frame. Covered arms and gentle wings project around the sitter, framing a most comfortable and supportive seat flanked by beautifully reed carved handholds. These are raised over serrated acanthus carved arm supports. The apron of the frame is carved with medallion motifs that became more visible in furnishings moving into the Rococo Revival period toward the end of the 19th Century. Cabriole legs raise the apron and terminate over beautifully scrolled toes. A stamped metal identification notes "KG 9512" under the chair, perhaps a later added tag. Remaining in simply outstanding condition, this is a very fine chair that will certainly be a highlight in whatever room it becomes a part of. Measurements: 26 3/4" D x 33 1/4" W x 44 1/2" H; 19 1/4" H to seat Condition Report: Worn surface with discoloration to gilding throughout and accompanying inpainting of some surface areas. Wear to feet with a chip loss to back of crest carving. Upholstery is an attractive covering in mellowed condition with light discolorations from time and use, overall remaining in serviceable condition. Sturdy, strong and very comfortable.
