Pair of French Louis XVI Style Parcel Gilt and Painted Maison Jansen Bergeres

About the Item

A beautiful pair of early 20th century French Louis XVI style bergère chairs with loose seat down filled cushions and nail head trim handcrafted in Paris and attributed to the distinguished French atelier, Maison Jansen, circa 1920s. Having timeless classical styling and hand-carved excellence on the entire framework, these antique French armchairs retain their original fine parcel-gilt and paint decorated finish. Emphasizing elegance and neoclassicism, they feature chapeau de gandarme shaped backrests with a carved ribbon and reed motif ending in scrolling ears, the cresting carved with a tied bow and roses. The ribbon and reed motif and carved acanthus leaves are prominent throughout the down-swept scrolling arms and armrests. The gently curving seat rails carved with guilloché are raised on twisted tapering, and stop-fluted legs headed with rosettes that terminate in toupie feet. The original upholstery is in very good condition and the original gilt finish and paint have beautifully and naturally distressed over the decades to perfection. Very sturdy chairs with generous proportions that will make an elegant addition to any room. Use in the living room or library for reading by the fireplace or in the master suite as a spot for morning coffee or afternoon tea.
