Anglo-Indian Silver Chased Chair

About the Item

This rare Anglo-Indian silver chased seat is an elaborate and striking marriage of Western form with Eastern artistry. Covered entirely in marvellously worked silver with parcel gilding, the form of this chair is inspired by the English Regency taste, while the exotic lion arms and accentuating motifs are distinctly Indian in origin. Such alluring furnishings first began to appear during the Mughal Reign (1526-1707) with the influx of British, French, Dutch and Portuguese explorers who found traditional Indian culture did not utilize tables and chairs, as activities such as cooking and eating were done on the floor. These travelers soon brought with them examples of their native furnishings and enlisted Indian craftsmen to recreate them, which gave birth to a distinct oeuvre of Indo-European furniture that blended Western designs with intricate wood and metalworking techniques that had been perfected by Indian artisans for hundreds of years. With British colonization of the subcontinent, by the 19th century, the princes of India were the primary source of commissions for what became known as Anglo-Indian furniture specifically clad in silver and gold, as these materials are considered pure and purifying in traditional Hindu scripture. Very few specimens of Anglo-Indian silver chased furniture of the quality and condition as this seat is known to exist. These extravagant pieces are exceedingly rare to encounter, making the opportunity to acquire even a single specimen quite exceptional. Though the term "chasing" is used to describe the type of engraving used to decorate precious metals (often used in conjunction with the term "repoussé"), chasing also refers to the technique of pushing the surface of precious metals inward over a solid frame to create a formed design, as illustrated by the current piece. Also known as "silver clad furniture" this subset of Anglo-Indian furniture is truly one-of-a-kind, seamlessly blending the functionality of a piece of furniture with the artistry of a decorative arts masterpiece. 19th century Measures: 34" wide x 22" deep x 26" high.
