Brutalist chairs in solid Elm, Aranjou, France, 1980's

About the Item

If we must admit our particular affection for this wood essence, it is because it has this something mystical when we contemplate its deep nuances. Indeed, the Romans' favorite tree for decorating public squares, the elm tree was even chosen by Baron Haussmann to adorn the streets of Paris during the great transformations under the Second Empire. A thousand-year-old history unfortunately ending in its almost total disappearance in the second half of the 20th century in europe due to graphiosis (disease). After this nice digression, let's get back to our chairs. The latter, as you might have understood, are entirely in stained elm. The T shape they feature is reminiscent of the "Juha" chair designed by Olavi Tapio Hänninen in 1958. The French manufacturer Aranjou, for its part, produced a whole series of furniture in solid elm during the 80's with a pronounced taste for brutalism.
