Diamond chair by René Jean Caillette

About the Item

René-Jean Caillette, born on September 22, 1919 in Fay-aux-Loges (Loiret) and died on September 19, 2004 in Sens1, was a French decorator and designer. After the Second World War, his work focused on the democratization of mass-produced furniture, followed by industrial publishing in the international style. He taught at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs and ESAG Penninghen in Paris from 1974 to 1980. René-Jean Caillette's early involvement with manufacturers and distributors of mass-produced furniture led him and Marcel Gascoin, in 1953, to found the very first designers' association in France: the Association des créateurs de modèles de série (ACMS), whose aim was to promote modern furniture, protect models and set sales prices. ACMS also played a key role in promoting mass-produced furniture at the Salon des arts ménagers until the 1960s4. After this pioneering period, René-Jean Caillette went on to create other remarkable pieces of furniture, expanding to include other publishers, such as the "Diamand" chair in 1957, winner of the Grand Prix at the 1958 World's Fair, published by Louis Maillet, and the "Coccinelle" chair in polyester and fiberglass in various colors, published by Steiner from the same year. Today, his pieces bear witness to the "aesthetic and formal transformations that revolutionized seating design in France in the 1950s".

  • Set of 4 Oak Chairs with White Fabric Seat by René Gabriel, 1950s
    By Rene Gabriel

Set of 4 oak chairs with white fabric seat by René Gabriel, 1950s René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements. Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...
