Disco Ball/Past forges Future Chair by Markus Friedrich Staab 2022

About the Item

Bavarian Armchair ca. 1860, contemporized to be a contemporary sculptural design piece. functional german art. 2 Legs added by Ebonist Toni Menacher, Intarsie of a disco ball added to seat, painted and lacquered with violine varnish.Masterpiece. Through my work I transform each chair into a unique and individual object. Chairs that once were mass-produced and homogenous, become singular and unique: re-cycled, re-furbished, re-mixed and re-decorated. I am particularly interested to give value and meaning to something that has been overlooked. To free the object from its traditional use and turn it into something special. Through this process the chair that was once used on a daily basis, becomes a self-sufficient piece of art. Hereby we explore traditional historical objects that gain value by a mere change of perspective. It is these themes of chairs as sculptural objects and art as object of utility that I am particularly fascinated by. It is the love for the daily things that we surround ourselves with, their unique shape and expression, that give me hope that not all is lost to pure consumerism and IKEAlisation.

  • Antique Victorian Mahogany Painted Hunzinger Barley Twist Arm Chair Ball & Claw
    By George Hunzinger
    Located in Dayton, OH
"Late Victorian Hunzinger Arm Chair. Made from Mahogany with a barley twisted frame featuring spindled accents, tapestry seat and back as well as ball and claw feet. George Jacob Hunzinger (1835 – 1898) George Hunzinger (1835-1898) was one of only a few furniture makers in the Victorian era whose designs were not derived from historical styles or fashion, but rather from an emerging vision of the modern era, with forms reflecting functional, mechanical influences which would characterize American design in the century to come. George Hunzinger was born in Germany in 1835 to a family which had been cabinetmakers since the 17th century. He emigrated to New York at the age of 20, already trained as a furniture maker; one of many German cabinetmakers, including the Herter Brothers, who came to the United States to flee the political and economic turmoil in Germany after 1848. Hunzinger came to a country preoccupied with the latest technology and inventions, where new machines and labor saving devices were patented daily. He was a prolific inventor himself, and became a leader in the ""patent furniture"" industry. From 1860 to his death in 1898, he was awarded 21 patents for furniture inventions, including extension tables, swivel top and nesting tables, reclining and folding chairs, convertible beds...
