Early No. 14 Bentwood Side Chair, by Michel Thonet, bistro chair, 1890s

About the Item

An early example of Thonet’s most famous chair, with original label dating it between 1890-1910, this chair is also mysteriously branded P.V.C. along the back of the seat, though we have not been able to decipher the originals of this bit of history. We also have another pair of these available, with a slightly larger seat and the same mysterious branding detail. Restored and re-caned so it can continue its journey into its second century. No.14 was the most simple chair out of the initial 14 launched in Thonet’s first catalogue of 1859. Using the newly patented technique of bending solid wood it was made of 6 pieces: a caned seat, 2 front legs, leg brace, back insert and a single piece for the rear legs and back. The chair was shipped flat-packed, 36 to a square meter and was assembled on site with 10 screws and 2 washers ( also manufactured by Thonet). Siegfried Giedion the architecture critic described the No.14 as “form purified by serial production”. Commonly known as the Vienna Chair, due to its proliferation of the cafe’s in the Austrian capital, Thonet also referred to as Konsum Stuhl (consumers chair) because it was readily available to the newly formed middle classes costing “the equivalent of 3 dozen eggs” ( Ostergard, Bent Wood ). The Vienna Chair was exhibited at London 1862 and Paris 1867 Worlds Fairs and Le Corbusier used them in his 1925 Pavillon de l’Esprit at the Exposition des Arts Decoratif, “We have introduced the humble Thonet chair of steamed wood, certainly the most common as well as the least costly of chairs. And we believe that this chair, whose millions of representatives are used on the Continent and in the two Americas, possesses nobility”. The patent ran out for the No.14 in 1880 and other firms from the Habsberg Empire were quick to copy and list it in own catalogues carrying over the same name of Vienna Chair. By 1900 it had been produced over 40 million times.

  • White Stackable Selene Chairs by Vico Magistretti for Artemide, Pair
    By Vico Magistretti
    Located in Edinburgh, Scotland
Vico Magistretti’s Selene was one of the first commercially produced chairs pressed from a single sheet of plastic. The Selene was first conceived by Magistretti in 1961 but it took several years working alongside the technicians and model makers at Artemide to produce the first production model in 1969. It was the S shaped cross section that solved the issue with lateral strength of the legs for Magistretti. “ It cannot be drawn. To draw it I’d have to have drawn at least a hundred cross sections” The Artemide chair was made from a single sheet of 3mm thick Reglar, a new glass reinforced polyester (GRW). It was first shown in white at the 1968 Triennale di Milano. Production of the Selene started in 1969 with white, red and black models shortly followed in orange in 1970. In 1984 came a new inspired pallet of yellow, light blue and pink for the aesthetically radical Los Angeles Olympics. Artemide’s production of the chair ceased in the 1990s then Heller reissued nylon and polycarbonate (colour dependant) injection moulded versions in 2002. The 1960s saw an intense period of exploration in product design with many embracing the recent advances of Industrial plastics. Verner Panton, Joe Colombo, Helmut Batzner and Sergio Mazza were amongst those who had chairs utilising modern plastics in production by the late 60s. Helmut Batzner’s chair...
