Large Pair of Louis XV Period Carved Walnut Armchairs

About the Item

A pair of Louis XV period carved walnut fauteuils a la Reine, of generous proportions. Mid-18th century, circa 1750. The channeled show wood frames with well-carved floral rocaille work. Raised on cabriole legs terminating in carved feet and headed with scroll carving. These extremely comfortable armchairs are now upholstered in fine Casamance fabric, and are in excellent condition overall. For similar antique chairs see the eminent cabinet-maker Charles François Normand - maitre in 1747. Measures: Height 38.5" (98cm) Width 28.5" (72.5cm) Depth 29.5" (75cm).

    A good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough library armchair, circa 1760. This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period. With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports. Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back. The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick (or 'Gothic') carving. Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina.
