Set of Four Bowback Bamboo-Turned Windsor Side Chairs
About the Item
This set, rare in its survival, succeeds in every aspect. While a Windsor chair may have one rare feature that is interesting and distinguishes it from other examples; in the case of this set, it is the very unusual old and probably original paterae on the seats. The delicate painted paterae on the seats combines successfully with the gracefully arched back and finely turned bamboo spindles and elevates this set beyond being high-quality examples of a relatively standard form of early seating into folk art and as such are desirable to collectors.
American bowback Windsor chairs were the most popular form of side chair by 1800 and were being produced through the country; specific features of these chairs suggest a Philadelphia or Delaware origin: the face of the bow is molded with a rounded crown flanked by narrow beads, the bow curves inward near the seat and forms a waist, some more pronounced than others. The seats are deeply saddled and the positioning of the slightly swelled creases of the bamboo turned legs relates closely to examples from Philadelphia and Delaware. Closely related examples are illustrated in Nancy Goyne Evans, American Windsor Chairs (New York, 1996), p. 104, no. 3-51; p. 106, no. 3-55 and p.175, no. 4-28, as well as in John Kassey, The Book of American Windsor Furniture (University of Massachusetts, 1998), p. 66, no. 64 and p. 68, no. 66.
