Set of Six English Gothic Revival Wrought Iron Dining or Garden Armchairs

About the Item

This set of six wrought iron dining armchairs are an excellent example of the style English Gothic Revival. Heavy iron frame with back splat in the form of large lancet arch above a smaller lancet arch with a brass quatrefoil in between. Important scrolled arms rests on a square brass woven seat. The outer lancet-shaped form frame continues to sturdy circular legs, connected with shapely H-stretcher, supported on circular brass pad feet. Gothic Revival drew inspiration from medieval style while contrasting the neoclassical style that was prevalent at the time. Gothic Architecture with pointed arched lancet windows and entries were very popular. This set of late 19th century chairs was inspired by an almost identical single arm chair dated 1815-1830 at the Victoria & Albert Museum Collection in London. The lancet arch design seen on the back of chairs was most likely taken from a gothic window design. Not only is this design a piece of art, but it is unusual to have furniture constructed in wrought iron. It was usually used for railings and gates. After 1830 cast iron was typically used for garden furniture. A rare set of six heavy wrought iron armchairs, the back with lancet arch below a brass quatrefoil, a four lobed shape. The outer lancet arch frame sprouts an important and artistic c-scrolled arm that rests on the frame of the brass woven square seat. Iron straps and rods are riveted and welded together. The outer back frame continues down turning into the circular straight back legs, connecting with the front legs with a curved H-stretcher.
