Vintage Pair of French Chairs with Arms Upholstered Velvet Rubelli

About the Item

Elegant and seductive pair of French chairs; they are made with a sturdy black lacquered wood; the structure is very solid; the legs, compact and strong, have a slim and pleasant design; the arms are curved outward to give more space and comfort to the seat; the back is wide and comfortable; were created between 1950 and 1955 by a skilled master craftsman of Lyon (France) and luck helped us to find them in an old store in Villeurbanne, the "Citiè des Antiquaires" neighboring town of Lyon, the coating was very damaged, so we proceeded to have them reupholstered by an old craftsman in Florence, was used a cotton velvet with vibrant green color, the quality of the fabric is among the best that can be found on the market, in fact, the velvet bears the name of the company Rubelli. The Rubelli group is an excellence in the field of furnishing fabrics; the company was founded in the late nineteenth century when Lorenzo Rubelli took over Giobatta Trapolin's company, renowned for the production of trimmings, velvets, silks, and brocades imitating antique fabrics. Lorenzo Rubelli took over the company in 1889, achieving immediate success. Over time, from generation to generation, from Palazzo Corner Spinelli, the historic Venetian headquarters, Alessandro Favaretto Rubelli conquers not only Europe but also the United States and the emerging markets of Asia. The extraordinary quality of the damasks, silks, and velvets produced in its own weaving mills makes Rubelli one of the most prestigious companies in the world in its sector. Moreover, thanks to four eighteenth-century looms, once operating in Venice and now transferred to Cucciago (province of Como), it is still able to weave precious velvets by hand. Among the many illustrious creations, we find the silk velvets designed by Rubelli for the Royal House at the beginning of the 20th century, the Aurum fabric in silk and gold threads, created for the curtain of the Bolshoi Theatre, or the fabric designed for Tiffany's shop windows. In the San Marco district, overlooking the Grand Canal stands the emblem of the transition from Gothic to Renaissance architecture in Venetian art: Palazzo Corner Spinelli, a splendid setting for the Historical Collection and the Rubelli Archives. Rubelli has kept alive over time the original Venetian tradition of creating fine fabrics of excellent quality that are works of art. Our chairs, with this rare and sought after fabric, has acquired a unique and refined appearance, communicating suggestions of tradition and functionality.
