W Chair by Cesar Janello for Raoul Guys Aa Éditions, 1947
Developed by the architect and designer César Janello (1918-1985) between 1944 and 1951, the "Silla W" is today undoubtedly an icon of modern Argentine and international design. The four-legged chair takes full advantage of the properties of the elasticity of the iron to hold the seat and the backrest, gives it movement, and allows to easily disassemble its parts without using screws. The first production was for personal use or intellectual friends who appreciated its clarity and constructive simplicity. In 1947, at the suggestion of his French publisher André Bloc , Janello made contact in Paris with the decorator Raoul Guys , who began to produce chairs for his AA style catalog. Amancio Williams for his part, oversees production in France to preserve the original design. In 1951 his friend, the architect Gerardo Clusellas , advises Jannello to make ergonomic adjustments: a double curvature in the seat, for which he proposes using laminated wood and lowering the height of the backrest. Janello accompanies these changes with a small reduction in size in the vertical dimension. This is how we can be sure about the date of manufacture of this W chair in Jequitiba and steel. 2 stools also available.
