Klaus Grabe, chaise longue model 'C5', stained red wood, plywood, United States, 1950s This beautiful well-designed chaise longue with an adjustable contour is designed by Bauhaus trained designer Klaus Grabe. The design is composed of a solid construction based on two dynamic curved frames that are consisting of symmetrical placed wooden slats. This leads to an airy and graphical surface, making these pieces suitable as standout in your backyard or to place in the heart of your interior. Besides its aesthetic appeal, functionality also plays a key role in this design by means of a mechanism that provides the sitter to adjust the angle of the seat. Klaus Grabe (1910-2004) emigrated from Germany to Mexico in the 1930s. Trained at Bauhaus he worked together with former Bauhaus Michael van Beuren and Morley Webb in Mexico. Later on, he left to work in New York City and founded ‘Klaus Grabe Inc.’ His main aim in life was to design functional, affordable furniture. He was one of the first to provide ‘prefab’ furniture that his clients could build together at home. His collection of prefabricated, easy to build up furniture included different chairs, tables, a desk, side tables and cabinets. The chaise longue model C5 was also part of the catalogue but was advertised not with a wooden seating but with webbing.
