The Bauhaus Educated Grabe left Germany in the 1930s along with many other alumni and professors of the legendary design school. He traveled first to Mexico, where he joined Bauhaus friends Josef and Anni Albers, and Hannes and Lena Meyer. Grabe then moved to New York, where he began to design the simply-constructed plywood furniture that he is best known for. Many of these designs utilized surplus webbing from the war. Others, such as Jens Risom, utilized these surplus materials in their early post war designs as well.
