As a maker, Nawaaz finds inspiration in the process of exploring materials. Trained as an architect and product designer, he experiments with a range of techniques mostly in manual production with a strong focus on hand-made. In 2013 he was part of Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives. His innovative designs – include mostly limited-edition furniture, lighting and interior objects – have captured the attention of collectors across the world and defined an original aesthetic that is distinctly modern, highlighting his African heritage. Several designs feature contemporary reinterpretations of traditional African weaving techniques and patterns. His main focus is on ‘slow design’using Neo-materials that are sustainable, often turning waste to new-found-treasure. His work has been shown at a number of international shows in Dubai, Paris, Milano, Vienna and in Tokyo. Nawaaz works across genders, seasons, geographical lines and creative disciplines, with a twin devotion to craftsmanship and experimentation.
