"Torso" Purple Lounge Chair by Paolo Deganello for Cassina

About the Item

Established in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, Italy, Cassina launched industrial design in Italy in the 1950s, based on an innovative approach that marked the transition from artisan production to mass production. This rare piece we present is a Torso Chaise Sofa attributed to the singular Italian Designer Paulo Deganello for Cassina. This Lounge Chaise is at the same time a work of art and a functional piece of furniture. The juxtaposition of textures, unconventional lines, and color combination (aubergine-colored leather upholstery in dialogue with the geometric squares of the backrest fabric) creates a cohesive and sculptural whole that can appeal to design enthusiasts and simple amateurs alike. The seat features an irregular curved line, an armrest on the left, and an added footrest with the inclusion of a piece of black leather. A small black wooden side shelf like a side table is also part of the piece. The grey base, with its unconventional sloping legs, accentuates the chair's distinctive character. It's in the legs that Deganello's genius is expressed. While two separate legs support the back, the front structure offers asymmetry and visual challenge. The left front leg has two legs, while the right front end has a short tripod shape. This complex balance between form and structure testifies to Deganello's artistic vision and innovation in furniture design, pushing the limits of the object and its function. You can use this chair as a lounge chair or sit comfortably like on an arm chair. Biography- Courtesy from Cassina Born in Este (Padua) in 1940, Paolo Deganello graduated as an architect in 1966 in Florence. From 1963 to 1974, he worked on urban planning for the town of Calenzano near Florence. In 1966, together with Andrea Branzi, Gilberto Corretti, and Massimo Morozzi, he founded the Archizoom Associati group, which closed in 1972. He continues to work as an independent architect and designer in Milan, with commissions in Italy and abroad. Deganello teaches at various universities, and his theoretical contributions, developed in the form of essays and articles in specialist journals, are innumerable. Since 1991, he has been Professor of Architectural Projects at ISIA in Florence. He takes part in world-class architecture and industrial design exhibitions. His contributions to design are highly personal and always radical in their manifestations.

    By Paolo Deganello
    Located in Pasadena, CA
Sculptural, Minimalist 1980s sofa by famed Italian designer Paolo Deganello (b. 1940). The sofa is discussed in “Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000,” by G. Gramigna, p. 212 (2003). In 1966 Deganello cofounded the Archizoom Associati in Florence. The collective was named after the British group of architects known as Archigram and the journal “Zoom.” Part of the radical design movement in Italy, Archizoom created anti-design furniture, such as the corner set “Safari” and the “San Remo” palm-frond lamp (both 1968 for Poltronova). After the group ended in the early 1970s, he continued with his private practice as an architect and designer in Milan, with commissions in Italy and abroad. Deganello’s work was featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York’s groundbreaking, “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,” in 1972. The Squash sofa...
