Vintage Midcentury Chaise Longue or Day Bed

About

A very rare Midcentury chaise longue or day bed in blue and rosewood. Very little is known about the designs origins of this beautiful and unusual chaise. The striking design using rosewood veneer complimented by large polished steel screw/bolts can be seen in a small number of high value listings on the internet and was also recently featured on British TV. However, all searchable listings show the design in sofa or chair format and I’ve never seen a chaise version advertised. The origins have been variously described as Norwegian, Danish or American but in all cases the sellers cannot pinpoint the designer or manufacturer. And neither can I – however, all agree that it shows excellent craftsmanship with a quality that could be associated with a notable midcentury designer and manufacturer. It’s dimensions make it a comfortable lounging sofa which can also be used as a full length single bed. The fabric is very much like the two tone fabric used on some Danish Mid century furniture in that it has a ‘tonic’ look – that is, it is predominantly electric blue in color but as it has flecks of purple throughout the color varies a little depending on the light and the angle it is viewed from. The upholstery and frame are in very good vintage condition, as are the unusual rubber Pirelli diaphragms that support the cushions bases. There are some small stains to the underneath of the cushions, and some scratches to the inside seat frame, which are naturally not visible in normal use. Other than that it has small signs of wear commensurate with age. The back cushion is filled with duck down and each base cushion is foam with a duck down infill cover that adds softness to the seating area.
