A Pair of Upholstered Club Chairs, England 1930s

About the Item

The club chair originated in the early 20th century, particularly during the Art Deco and Belle Époque periods. These chairs were initially designed for the exclusive gentlemen clubs and lounges. They were created to provide a comfortable and stylish seating option for the members of these clubs, who would gather to socialize, smoke cigars, and enjoy various forms of entertainment. These chairs gained popularity due to their sumptuous cushioning and welcoming, enveloping design. Their rich upholstery provided the perfect sanctuary for relaxation, and they quickly became a symbol of sophistication and luxury. Master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities, with this pair of lounge chairs providing ample support for the back and great sitting comfort as well.‎ This angular style provides elegant lines while the backs are softly tilted, further highlighting the coziness and comfort. Quality craftsmanship was evidently of optimum importance for the cabinetmaker who created these chairs. The element that truly elevates the modern outline of these chairs’ is the upholstery: the light, luxuriously soft fabric is exquisite and pairs with the design’s curvature very well. Club chairs continue to be highly sought after by collectors and interior designers today. Their timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship make them prized pieces of furniture that can add a touch of sophistication to any interior. ‎Condition: In good vintage condition.
