About the Item

armchair called Club by Raphael in transparent amber color from the 60s space age the cushions were reupholstered identically, we wanted to preserve the underside of the cushion originally in skai and its closure Raphael Raffel FRENCH, 1912-2000 Better known in the design world as Raphaël, Raphaël Raffel was one of the most influential French mid-century modern designers and decorators. Her stylistic inspirations ranged from 18th century Parisian design to space age American and Italian chic of the 1960s. Born in 1912 in Paris, Raffel studied design at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1934, he began interior design and counted among his first clients the legendary French-American dancer Josephine Baker. In the 1930s and 1940s, Raffel was considered one of the illustrious French "ensemblier-decorators", designers who were not content with creating furniture but were interested in all elements of interior space, decorations wall lighting. In the 1950s, Raffel's talents as a decorator and designer attracted the attention of the French civil service. Several orders were placed with Raffel to decorate embassies, university residences, post offices, the National Assembly as well as the ground floor and a wing of the Paris City Hall. Additionally, in 1952, Raffel worked with French designer, sculptor and architect André Arbus to decorate a section of the luxury ocean liner Bretagne. The same year, Raffel's works were exhibited alongside designs by French ceramist Georges Jouve at the Salon des Arts Ménagers. In 1958, Raffel exhibited at the Brussels Universal Exhibition. During the 1960s and 1970s, Raffel drew inspiration from popular space-age style, as evidenced by his plush crescent-shaped sofas and pod-shaped lounge chairs, club chairs and armchairs, which he designed for furniture manufacturers such as Maison Honoré and Herman Miller. Raffel also combined lacquer, glass work, distinct colors, and gilded bronze in his elegant French neoclassical parlor and cocktail tables, side tables, and desks. Toward the end of the 1970s, Raffel's business began to decline, eventually closing in 1983. Raffel continued to work on design and decoration commissions until his death in 2000.
