About the Item

DAYBED The daybed is as ancient as civilization. In Mediterranean regions, where wood was scarce, they were carved from stone with cloth pillows added for comfort. Studio Greytak’s daybed brings stone and wood together with a slight western flair. Harking back to Hellenic design with an inviting frame for gathering, a solid repeating pattern around the base, and rare white agates reminiscent of the Greek Isles, you can almost see Socrates and Plato convening on the velvety cotton cushion. Leather straps and bronze fasteners are a nod to the Montana artisans who lovingly crafted the piece around the calming agates. This is truly a piece to relax and find one’s center. Brazilian agate is considered some of the best agate in the world. When lava reaches Earth’s surface, it bubbles as it cools, forming pockets of air. Over centuries, water trickles through fractures in the rock, depositing silica gel on the cavity walls, which hardens into concentric bands. This is how agates get their distinctive colors and patterns. Agates have a slow vibrational frequency, which makes them very calming. For centuries they have been used to protect mothers and children during pregnancy and to cleanse and stabilize auras. Brazilian agate, in particular, balances physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual energy, bringing calm, strength, focus, confidence, and positivity. When the Spaniards settled California, they brought seedlings of walnuts from Mexico to plant as a food source and shade tree for their missionaries. Claro, a Spanish word, means “bright” or “light,” most likely referring to the sapwood, which is nearly white although the heartwood can have a medley of subtle colors including shades of brown, black, red, green, yellow, and even purple. Many designers are familiar with the wild patterns of claro from the work of George Nakashima, who used it in many of his pieces. Highly sought after but limited in supply, claro is also commercially critical as it is a vital rootstock for walnut orchards. Energetically, claro walnut is associated with inner peace. It is an introspective wood that also helps block out negative energies. Bronze is often associated with fire because of its reddish color. An alloy of copper and tin, bronze takes on the properties of both but is generally thought to enhance courage and practicality and encourage focus on work.
