VERY FINE SET OF FOUR ENGLISH REGENCY MAHOGANY SABRE LEG DINING CHAIRS England, Circa 1810-20 Item # 502NPG22 This is a rather excellent set of four matched English Regency period dining chairs, each of exquisite craftsmanship executed entirely in mahogany. The crest rails in particular are magnetic, the swirling grains of mahogany positively glowing beneath years of regular polishing and waxing. They are tightly incised with raised beading along the sides and bottom of the crest rail, disappearing over the backward curl of the top edge finishing in tiny scrolls on either side. The stiles are a curvy piece of scrolled and molded mahogany stretching in a single unit from the crest through the toe, stretched with a broadly reeded back support equally between the seat and crest. The form is strongly influenced by the Greco-Roman classicism, this form generally being referred to as a "klismo" chair, particularly for those originating elsewhere on the Continent. A chair with a very similar base, dated April 1809, appears on page 1860 of the Estimate Book of the Gillows firm (American Furniture and the British Tradition to 1830, Kirk, p. 291). The design is particularly prone to structural weakness, as it is inevitably cut across the grain as the legs and stiles curve, making survivors relatively difficult to find - especially in sets. This set has certainly seen similar repairs due to this weakness, particularly a few inches above where the seat frame joins the stiles. The underside of the frame is simple and originally was locked together with diagonal corner blocks set in opposing grooves. These were replaced at some point in the 20th Century by triangular blocks, which have done a nice job of keeping the frames quite sturdy and solid. The result is a very functional and enjoyable set of four chairs of utmost quality to be cherished by any serious collector of fine English antiques. Measurements: 18" W x 21 1/2" D x 32 1/2" H; 18" H to seat Condition Report: Upholstery in fair condition with some ticking, three seats with minor stains and discolorations. Worn surfaces with early finish and later touch ups, the oxidized appeal of some of the earliest finish appearing to possibly be original or at least very early. Significant wear and abrading, much of this oxidized and part of the overall very lovely patina. Repairs above joint of stile and seat rail on two chairs, the right stile of one a bit loose at the old crack (we can repair this upon request). Other old repairs to stiles, one chair with later screw securing stile to crest on right side. Diagonal corner braces replaced with triangular blocking on all chairs. A very fine set of chairs.
