  • Axel Einar Hjorth "Utö" Bench, Sweden ca 1935
    By Axel Einar Hjorth
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This “Utö” bench is from the Swedish designer, Axel Einar Hjorth’s Sportstugemöble furniture line. This bench has a rather simple, yet well-thought out design. The frame is made of pine, mixing the aesthetics of rural, traditional handcraft with international modernism. Produced by AB Nordiska Kompaniet, this bench belongs to Hjorth's line of modernistic cabin furniture from the 1930's. The seat of the bench is thick and robust, with an oval shaped pine board, assuring sturdiness and stability. The symmetrically carved back with a gap in the middle offers comfort and functionality. The four tapered legs of the bench follow the shape of the backrests on both sides, accentuating the geometrical aspect, and highlighting the symmetry of this piece. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 54.92 in W x 18.7 in D x 31.3 in H ; Seat height 15.55 in 139.5 cm W x 47.5 cm D x 79.5 cm H; Seat height 39.5 cm Literature: Christian Björk, Thomas Ekström...

  • Bas van Pelt Set of Six Dining Chairs for My Home, The Netherlands, 1930s
    By Bas Van Pelt
    Located in Utrecht, NL
These rare dining chairs from Dutch designer, Bas van Pelt, are testimonies to the less talked about, but brilliant era of early Dutch modernism. Van Pelt’s designs were only produced when an order was placed, therefore the numbers of the models are very small. The construction of these rare 1930s dining chairs is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a playful representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s’ straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this set of chairs is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. These handcrafted chairs have a solid oak frame and a distinctive backrest comprised of oak spindles. While made of solid oak, the design has an open feel to it thanks to the vertical and open spaces on the back and the structure of the legs. The slightly curved line of the backrest’s top nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, and show wonderful craftsmanship. The upholstered seat adds textural interest, complementing the oak’s beautiful colour. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the expert craftsmanship, these chairs are top-notch both visually and technically. Placed next to each other, their appearance is enhanced even further. Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for Modern Art, Contemporary Art, and Design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor scratches on the wood. The seats have been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 19.68 in W x 21.65 in D x 37.79 in H; Seat height 18.89 in 50 cm W x 55 cm D x 96 cm H; Seat height 48 cm About the Designer: Bas Van Pelt (1900 Dordrecht (NL) - 1945 Sandbostel (DE)) was a well-known Dutch interior and furniture designer, known for the clarity and quality of his designs. His works created in the 1930s and 1940s are regarded for their progressive design and quality. While he is most well-known for his chair designs, van Pelt was also active as an interior designer. He also designed fabrics for window...

  • Göran Malmvall "501" Pine Dining Chairs for Svensk Fur, Sweden 1950s
    By Goran Malmvall
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The Svensk Fur produced line of Göran Malmvall furniture is a nod to modernist design with traditional Swedish craftsmanship. The design of these chairs relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork. Göran Malmvall’s Swedish pine designs often get compared to the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, even though its pieces are exceptional designs on their own merit. Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This set of dining chairs holds a strong expression with its sturdy shaped, organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material. The backrests are formed by straight lines that slightly curve near the edges. This curvature is followed by the seats that are carved ergonomically, creating visual interest. The joinery is visible throughout the chairs, and features both bolts and seamless wooden joinery which is always a sign of quality craftsmanship. The wide backrests showcase the solid pinewood’s beautiful pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel of the design along with the conical legs that are gently tapered and tilted to support stability. The simple design of these chairs is in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, it also portrays a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. This set is sure to bring this sense to any space while providing stability, sitting comfort, and natural beauty via the Swedish pine. Condition: In vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Items have scratches and marks on the wood. Dimensions: 16.14 in W x 17.32 in D x 31.88 in H; Seat height 17.71 in 41 cm W x 44 cm D x 81 cm H; Seat height 45 cm ?About the Designer: Göran Malmvall (1917–2001) was the youngest son of the manufacturing company’s founder, Karl Andersson.
