About the Item

De Coene, set of ten dining chairs, oak and leather, Belgium, 1940s This characteristic set of dining chairs features a sculptural frame with a carved, bent connection between the backrest and seat. The backrest shows a bentwood beautifully grained wooden slat. The seat is covered in soft black leather. The detailing of this set is exquisite and shows the quintessential traits of Danish design well executed, natural materials and a sculptural, soft design. Set of ten chairs, in oak and original brown red leather by De Coene, Belgium, 1930s. This set of ten dining chairs with original leather upholstery is designed by De Coene. The chairs have a solid oak frame, tapered legs. The central feature of this design are the pointy are the pointy armrests that form a playful, sharp element of this set. The colour of the leather combines wonderful with the dark oak. The chairs are very original in their design, with hints of avant la lettre minimalism and Art Deco. De Coene was founded in 1887 in Kortrijk (Belgium) by Jozef de Coene, who was at that time 13 years old. In 1895 his younger brother Adolphe joined the company. In their early years De Coene was inpired by Henry van de Velde, Art Deco and the Arts and Crafts-movement. The company made many custom-made furnishings which leads to an expansive growth. After world war one, the brother visited the United States where they became acquinted with laminated wood production, and purchased a wood-stripping machine. They were the first company that made triplex in Belgium which led to the ability to mass produce. In 1954 they received the right to produce Knoll furniture. But although the company produced on a large-scale, their were still world famous for their meticulously detailed, high-quality and Art Deco inspirerd furniture. This original Art Deco set comes with traces of age and use. The leathers shows severe signs of age and use with the leather being worn and teared on several parts.
