Rare "Sculpture" Dining Set (10 chairs & table) By Max Sauze, 1970

About the Item

Extremely rare and supremely elegant "Sculpture" dining set by french artist Max Sauze produced by Group S.A,France. Please note that the photos illustrate only 6 chairs due to space but this dining set comes complete with 10 chairs.Sauze was born in 1933 and trained as a sculptor and fine artist. The "sculpture" chair alongside his wonderful "orion" chandelier is both one of Sauze's most beautiful and also rarest creations and to find a set of six sculpture chairs with the extremely rare matching table is a fantastic find. The sculpture chairs and table base are made of chromed steel wire which on the chairs' seat and backrest is woven into a beautiful op art motif referencing the work of visionary artist Victor Vasarely and the accompanying op art movement which was centered in Paris during this period and exposed to the public through the tireless work of the famed galerie Rene Denise.The design also appears to draw some influence from the earlier constructivism movement. As you can see there is a beautiful perception altering weaving interplay of light, form and shadow, it is functional sculpture of the highest order. The set comprises ten sculpture chairs and matching dining table. We also have an example of the extremely rare optional leather seat pad and back rest should the buyer wish us to have some made up to the original pattern. A complete set of ten leather pads and backrests would cost an extra $1500 on top of of the listed price. The leather pads are very rare and were rarely ordered as a luxury option, I guess because few people wanted to hide the beautiful op art motifs. "The investigation of material, volume, and construction made it possible for us in 1918, in an artistic form, to begin to combine materials like iron and glass, the materials of modern Classicism, comparable in their severity with the marble of antiquity.
