About the Item

Scandinavian dining room chairs from the 1950s. Four sprout chairs in teak and black lacquered backrest and frame, signed with Nesto Sweden. Overall, a good condition with age-standard signs of use. Dimensions: H 83.5 cm, B 42.5 cm, T 43 cm, sh 43.5 cm Nesto AB was one of the most important manufacturers of wooden furniture in Scandinavia. As furniture from Northern Europe became more popular throughout Europe in the 1940s, the company shipped remarkable quantities to many countries, including some outside Europe. For BeNeLux, a trading partner was sought for the entire local market and products began to be branded with stickers. This became increasingly important as many Scandinavian designs resembled each other and Nesto wanted to make it clear that its chairs were made of solid wood, not just curved plywood. For example, the classic spindle back chair by the famous designer Yngve Ekström, designed in 1956, had to be be marked. Swedish architect Yngve Ekström worked for Nesto as chief designer for a long time. He brought with him a groundbreaking idea for the next decades: dismountable chairs in a cardboard box for easy shipping, which the customer could then assemble himself quickly and easily. Ekström's brother had already incorporated the handling of this into the concept years earlier: the hexagon socket wrench - which only became world-famous much later by another Swedish trading company with a worldwide presence. The Nesto Stolefabrik AB produced wooden furniture from 1870-1992, from 1882 in Nässjö, an area with a lot of wood production in Smaland near Jönköping. There PJ Andersson had a sufficiently large building area for expansion. In 1910 Johan August Carlson took over the company, who had already brought his expertise with him years before, as he had previously worked for another chair factory. His son John Martin Carlson then took over in the 1940s and expanded the range of chairs to include tables and desks. The production is closed, but the factory hall still stands today.
