About the Item

FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE CARVED POLYCHROME AND GILT CANED DINING CHAIRS SET OF 12 European probably circa 1930 Item # 311LZP30P An absolutely gorgeous set that remains remarkably complete, retaining a full twelve chairs, they are beautifully carved in the manner of the Louis XV style of a century-and-a-half prior. The frames are an endless array of opposing c-scrolls and various iterations of acanthus and other foliage, all focusing in on the primary object: the shell-carvings of the rail and apron. The chair back and seat bottom are caned and a single loose cushion is tied to the frame while each of the twelve chairs features open arms with upholstered rests. All chairs rest over cabriole legs. It is always very difficult for us to find a complete set in these much larger quantities, so it is always a great joy when we can bring in such a beautifully decorative set. The natural tarnish and oxidization adds much needed historical surface to the room where texture and some chaotic elements are needed. Measurements: 39" H x 19 5/8" D x 20" H to seat x 23" W Condition Report: Images are a "representative sample" - exacting shots of each chair individually are available upon request; upholstery in generally fair-to-good condition, all with at least minor use indicators while only a few have more major blemishes (one cushion with two large stains to the seat, one chair with hole to arm upholstery, etc.). Chairs are sturdy and mostly tight in the joints with only the minor wiggle associated with this form of chair; they are ready for active regular use in the home; extremely worn finish with some chipping and loss to the carvings throughout, the wear of the surface mosly just adding some aesthetic appeal. One shell carving in the crest of one chair has seen a large chip loss which was "repaired" with some kind of composite material that was formed to loosely simulate the missing shell carving - a poor repair, though not particularly noticeable in the scheme of things. Caning in good condition with only the most minor breaks.
