About the Item

Set of 6 Pine Chairs style of Axel Einar Hjorth Axel Einar Hjorth named three of his furniture lines after islands in the archipelago east of Stockholm: ‘Utö’, ‘Blidö’, and ‘Torö’. As creative director for NK, Nordiska Companiet, Einar Hjorth typically sourced the most extravagant materials for his neoclassical-inspired designs. As the Utö dining table and side table (see separate listings) and chairs like these, however, are sportstugemöbler, refined cabin furniture based on Sweden’s rural tradition and intended for the vacation homes of Nordiska’s high end clientele. Axel Einar Hjort was the chief architect för Nordiska Kompaniet (luxury department store in Stockholm) furniture office for eleven influential years during the 1930's, 1927-1938. Being the head architect at Nordiska Kompaniet, was the most important position for a furniture designer in the interwar period. His exclusive furniture design had a huge impact at the national and international exhibitions. It was a period characterized by changing style ideals, from luxurious classicism to tight functionalism. Axel Einar Hjorth participated in this aesthetic transformation, but his work was often peculiar and was often criticized. As a leading furniture designer he played an important role for Swedish designs international breakthrough and reputation. Despite this, the Swedish design history did not observe him as he deserves. He can be described as a classicist and modernist at the same time. Hjort's unmistakable elegant and luxurious designs bestowed on him a unique position in Swedish furniture history. Hjort combined exclusive, exotic woods with silver-plated metal and bright colors such as red, blue and gold. As functionalism made its entry in Sweden, Hjort's critics claimed that he designed furniture only for a rich elite. At the exhibitions in Barcelona 1929 and Stockholm 1930 Hjort presented a range of unique furniture pieces in ebony, macassar and walnut, all carrying significant decor details. But he also designed very basic furniture like the 'Lovoe'/'Lovö' or 'Utoe'/'Utö' lines, which were rather unusual and very modernistic at the time. Items by Axel Einar Hjort rarely appear on the market today and are considered highly collectible.
