Set of Eight Antique Step Down Windsor Chairs

Excellent set of eight black Torsion dining chairs designed by Giancarlo Piretti for KI. There are seven arm chairs and one side chair. They are in wonderful vintage condition with minor wear that you would expect with age. Please see photos, circa 1995. In 1997 Giancarlo Piretti received an award for his Torsion seating collection. These chairs are part of that collection. Designed and made initially and primarily for commercial purpose they are extremely comfortable and flexible. They are lightweight and stackable. This set has an attractive textured high impact black plastic seat, back, and arms on chrome legs. No one expects this chair have the comfort it provides. The back flexes. This flex is achieved with the torsion mechanism which creates gradually increasing resistance. They were designed for comfort during long meetings or lectures. But, that makes them perfect for long dinners with lots of conversation. Or, family night with puzzles, cards, and games. The designer, Giancarlo Piretti, was born in Bologna Italy in 1940. He attended art schools there and subsequently taught Interior Design. During that time, he was also designing furniture for Anonima Castelli. He has won numerous awards and has items in many museums including MoMA New York. He still lives and works in Bologna with is son, designer Alessandro Piretti. Gorgeous vintage Chinoiserie Regency style Union National Inc patinated black painted & gilt dining chairs 5 side & 1 armchair set of 6. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Touched up gold accents and some nicks & dings but left the gorgeous natural age patina consisting of cracking to paint, small nicks & dings, etc. The seats have been upholstered with new old stock fabric with red & gold dragonflies on olive green background. Handsome vintage Bauhaus style bentwood chairs attributed to Thonet #18 Café chair set of 6. These chairs have been attributed based upon archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, each seat has varying conditions. These chairs were originally designed in 1876 by Michael Thonet. Famously known as design #18 or “THE” Café Chair, the design is still produced today by Thonet and there are and have been many knockoffs through the years. It was the first chair where the seat and back insert were directly connected and the back insert, which echoes the shape of the back, creates extra support and stability.
