Set of Six Classical Dining Chairs Attributable to Duncan Phyfe, New York

About

A very fine set of six federal-era saber leg dining chairs, attributable to New York cabinetmaker, Duncan Phyfe. Made of a fine and dense mahogany, these American classical chairs offer a figured mahogany veneer on the crest rail, a carved centre rail with acanthus foliage and turned rosette, upholstered slip seat and saber legs, New York city, circa 1820. We and other experts within our circle of pickers and auction houses feel strongly that these chairs could have come from the Phyfe workshop. There is a single chair in the Metropolitan Museum in the stacks of the American wing that has a different carved center rail but otherwise is identical in every other way. The scale and elegant if not dramatic curves and subtle twist in upper chair stile as well as the finely carved roundels at the termination of that stile all point to a master joiner, either Phyfe's workshop itself or one of the other quality cabinet makers in NYC at the time. The wood selection is excellent. A choice of top quality mahogany and the distinguished manner in which the centre raIls and the carved roundels were executed are also trademarks of Phyfe design. Measures: 18” wide x 21” deep x 32” high.
