The Meeks family furniture manufacturing firm was one of the largest and most prolific American furniture makers in New York City. Founded by Joseph Meeks in 1797, the firm was rivaled by furniture makers Duncan Phyfe, Allison and Lannuier, and most famously by John Henry Belter. The company was run by three generations of the family, passed down from father to son, until 1869. By 1833, J. and J. Meeks had an organized system of sales outlets along the Atlantic coast which supplied an area from Boston to New Orleans, operated by various family members in various cities. In January 1821, a warehouse was opened in New Orleans and was run until 1838 by Joseph Meeks' son Theodore.
