About the Item

Rare set of drawing room stately furniture. Sofa, six armchairs and six chairs. Mahogany and veneered mahogany, chairs and armchairs with high straight backs, scrolled armrests in the form of lotus blossoms and winged foliage, resting on front corbel-shaped legs and saber back legs. Floral upholstered, 19th century. (Usual restorations). Sofa: H 98, L 174, D 70 cm Armchairs: H 96, L 58, D 60 cm. Chairs: H 90, L 49, D 51 cm. Our set of drawing room furniture is highly characteristic of the watershed marked in the field of Fine Arts by the French Second Restoration: Charles X, the Comte d’Artois, Louis XVI’s and Louis XVIII’s elder brother, inherits the crown in 1824. Patron of the arts during the Ancien Regime, he however soon turned to be less interested in the latters during his reign. Artists such as Jacob, Baudry, Jeanselme, Bellangé and Jean Jacques Werner had been active in Paris since the early 1800s, defining the decorative aesthetics of the time. Reaction against the gaudy spectacle and monumental pomp of the Empire, the Restoration, in arts, fostered an elegance, refinement and subtlety that had been obscured by Napoleonic grandeur. Graceful yet unpretentious harmony therefore characterizes Restoration furniture, which was comfortable, gracious and portable. Bulky pieces with brass fittings gave way to smaller ones with delicate profiles and inlay decoration. Some tables had in-curving square-section legs with paw feet. Gueridons, often used as side tables in dining rooms, were produced in large numbers and sizes. Chairs were graceful and easy to move. Chair backs were arched. Legs were straight or slightly out-turned, back legs had a pronounced outward flare. Thin threads usually underline the structure of the chairs as well as armchairs, representative of the evolution of furniture since the reign of Napoleon until the advent of the last reigning Bourbon. Indeed, the decorative repertoire employed in our our exhibit does not take on a monumental intention, being rather announced by a light construction substituted to the robustness and the hieratic dimension of the carved elements. Another significant detail: The original upholstered tapestry is preserved in all its freshness, through the pastoral motifs made up of stylised bunches of interlacing flowers. This rare set, coming from a castle in France is all the more significant as its realization originates in a short period somehow remembered as characterized by outrageous expenditure and royal authoritarianism However, through its simplicity and most subtle features less sumptuous than during the Napoleonic Era, Charles X furniture carves out a niche for itself in the evolution of furniture thanks to its constantly renewed finess made conspicuous here by recognizable ornaments.
