About the Item
Arnold Madsen - The Clam Chair, 1944
A rare and highly collectible original production from the early 1950s of the iconic Clam Chair by Arnold Madsen. This example was produced under excsluive license by Norwegian producers Vik & Blindheim, you were responsible for all authentic Clam Chairs produced from 1953 onwards. It has been fully restored by our expert team in London with dark stained beech arms and legs. It has been reupholstered in premium Australian sheepskin.
The Clam Chair was designed in 1944 in Copenhagen and has become an icon of the Danish Modern design movement. For many years this mysterious chair had been credited to Danish architect Philip Arctander, however recent research has confirmed the true designer to be Arnold Madsen. The "Muslingstolen", as it became known, was the first collaboration between designer Madsen and cabinet maker Henry Schubell and it set the foundation for many years of prosperous collaboration between the pair. The 1950s version was produced under license by Vik & Blindheim in Norway, where the chair found commercial success through the 1950s.
