Contemporary LC2 Armchair Celebrating 100 Years Bauhaus and Le Corbusier

About

Bauhaus celebrates its 100th birthday. For this, the Swiss designer Ginger Zalaba designed a re-edition of the most famous Swiss Bauhaus architect Le Corbusier. For her reinterpretation of the LC2, Ginger Zalaba now shows that surfaces and shades of this icon can be rethought. She presents the Le Corbusier armchair in striking color and texture worlds that change perspectives. So she gives him a new but still classy face lifting after 100 years. The LC2 is an icon, so there was no question of working on the form, but focusing on the surfaces. It is an attempt to take the furniture out of time and integrate it into a contemporary setting so that one can’t read the age of 100 years. For this she uses fabrics that have accompanied the fashion world for years, such as tartan, twill and tweed. The result is a collection whose textures and shades create the transfer to contemporary home décor trends. Zalaba divides the armchair into three design areas: frame, seat and armrest upholstery. The striking, geometric steel frame is presented in six new colors, which are powder coated with metallic finishings like brass and bronze or a sleek black. With color and texture she guides the eye, emphasizing form and proportion. Inspirations were her favorite fashion brands like Gucci, Burberry and Chanel. The trendy LC2 combines an interplay of geometries, colors and textures that skillfully combines the best of contemporary and classy design. Ginger Zalaba, born in Zurich 1987, is a Bauhaus child. Her grandfather Otto Kolb was one of the pioneers of American New Bauhaus. The question of how we deal with the Bauhaus heritage inspired her to redesign iconic pieces. This resulted in a wonderful project in which she was able to combine fashion and interior design. Access to the Craft plays an important role and sets the tone of understanding material and construction. After graduating in Art and Exhibition Design at the ZHdK with a Master, Zalaba studied Interior Design in Milano at IED. There - as in the Bauhaus university - the workshop was the workplace. Ginger Zalaba launched her first furniture collection KOLB in 2015. In her work, she combines furniture, interiors and art - an interdisciplinary mix that enables her to capture projects from a variety of perspectives. Zalaba design stands for New Bauhaus design, Swiss-Italian luxury furniture and modern interiors. For over 30 years the family business Zalaba design is active in the design field.

About Le Corbusier (Designer)

Swiss-born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, best known by his adopted name Le Corbusier, was a highly influential architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer whose career spanned almost five decades. A pioneer of progress-minded modern architecture, Le Corbusier sought to impose a rational order on the chaos of the world through design. He rejected the excessive architectural ornament and developed a style that became known as Brutalism, creating buildings with elemental geometric forms that were made of industrial materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. Le Corbusier believed that pure, well-designed spaces could offer a lesson in how little is needed to achieve happiness. To convey this notion, the architect prioritized modern, open interiors and emphasized light, rational designs. His architecture and interiors share a clear sense of space and structural order, underlining the beauty in harmony, proportion and simplicity.

Le Corbusier’s furniture espouses these same ideals. His designs are spare, minimal and efficient but at the same time offer supreme comfort. Collaborating with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and designer Charlotte Perriand, he devised such iconic pieces as the LC2 Le Grand Confort armchair and the LC4 chaise longue. Each couples a tubular chrome frame with soft, supple leather upholstery, lending an organic warmth to an industrially made design. In his furniture, Le Corbusier broke new ground in ergonomics. The shape of the LC4 chaise is taken directly from the human form; the classic cowhide upholstery makes the sitter feel weightless; and the piece features an adjustable positioning mechanism to promote total relaxation.

Such planning and intelligence were the hallmarks of Le Corbusier’s career. Whether in his designs for private residences such as the Villa Savoye near Paris, apartment towers like the Unité D'habitation in Marseilles, or in his furniture, he worked toward a style of living that was expansive and flexible. The strength and simplicity of line of Le Corbusier’s seating pieces give them a sculptural presence in any décor, yet they are sublimely restful. And as you will see from the offerings on these pages, Le Corbusier’s furniture reflects a worldly taste: it is at once refined, cosmopolitan and chic.
