- Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser "Kaminstolen" for Arnestad Bruk, Norway, 1940sBy Fredrik A. Kayser, Adolf RellingLocated in Utrecht, NLDesigned in 1946 by Norwegian designers, Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser, these so called “Kaminstolen” are a distinct pair thanks to their peculiar frame. The name can be roughly translated as “fireplace or stove chair”. Besides the unique look, these chairs’ manufacturer is also noteworthy as many of the Norwegian classic furniture pieces from the 1950s and 60s first saw the light of day at the furniture factory Arnestad bruk in Vollen. The fireplace chair as an expression refers to all kinds of chairs placed in front of fireplaces, connected by a single shared characteristic: their comfort. Here, comfort refers to both the ergonomic and visual aspect. Fireplace chairs usually come in pairs and feature an upholstered body designed for relaxing. The mahogany frames are very precisely crafted, showcasing the exciting angles and forms predominantly on the arms. At the same time, while there are numerous sharp angles and corners, the chairs still exude a cosy and welcoming appearance which is a result of the smoothed edges of the arms and legs. Both Relling and Kayser were of great importance for the functionalist furniture...Category

- Easy Chair by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen, Denmark 1952By Thorald Madsens Snedkeri, Jorgen Hoj, Poul KjærholmLocated in Utrecht, NLDesigned in 1952 by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen Cabinetmakers, this easy chair in ash and flag halyard is a true modernist masterpiece. Removing everything that was not strictly necessary for its shape and function, the designers created a geometrical and transparent work, that is subdued, yet attention drawing at the same time. The work was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in 1952, the only time Kjærholm participated in this event. Although the design was daring for its time, it was welcomed as a breath of fresh air at the exhibition. As a reviewer wrote at the time:? "The most ‘progressive’ interior… was no doubt the one made by architects Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm in collaboration with Thorald Madsen. {…} One has to admit that it provided a refreshing change from the pervading solemnity. It is the duty of all exhibitions...Category
