Illum Wikkelsø, 'Ox' lounge chair, black leatherette, teak, Denmark 1960s. Well-designed easy chair in black leatherette upholstery by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø. This 'Ox Chair' shows some interesting details. For instance, the wide and large headrest at the top of the back. The tufted backrest create a nice interruption in the surface. The armrests are elegantly folded and run smoothly over into the back. The stained legs position the seat in a tilted, comfortable angle. Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) is trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality, now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen. Please note that this item is in good, used condition.
