Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius for Poul Bachmann 'PB10' Lounge Chairs

About the Item

Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius for Poul Bachmann, pair of folding lounge chairs, model ‘PB10’, oak, leather, canvas, brass, steel, rope, Denmark, 1963. Crafted in 1963 by the skilled cabinetmaker Poul Bachmann, this folding easy chair bears the design of Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius. Originally showcased at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition held at Designmuseum Danmark in the same year, this chair embodies a striking resemblance to a deck chair, characterized by its sleek and open framework along with an inclined seat. The construction of the chair is comprised of wooden slats in oak with a minimalist appearance. Remarkably ergonomic, the chair allows for adjustment of the backrest angle and provides a generously proportioned seat. Adding to its functionality, the chair can be easily folded by adjusting the leather strap connecting the backrest and front, enabling convenient storage when not in use. The chair's original upholstery features cushions covered in beige canvas, complementing the overall natural look of the chair. Preben Juhl Fabricius (1931-1984) and Jørgen Kastholm (1931-2007) became friends in the 1950s at the School of Interior Design. In the 1960s they started a collaboration. Although they have worked also individually, it is as a duo that they have achieved their greatest success. During the eight years of partnership, they managed to create a wide selection of very high-quality designs. The results were often minimalistic and functional designs in steel, glass and leather. Most of the furniture of the Danish designer duo was produced by the German manufacturer Kill International.

  • Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen Pair of 'PK20' Lounge Chairs in Leather
By Poul Kjærholm, E. Kold Christensen

Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen, pair of lounge chairs model 'PK20', leather, chrome-plated steel, Denmark, 1968 A highly modern design that embraces clear lines and curvaceous shapes. A cantilever chair is all about ease and comfort as it provides the characteristic bending function, and together with the high backrest and head cushion, a pleasant seating experience is guaranteed. Kjærholm used chrome-plated steel for the base and black leather for the seating, materials that fit within the modernistic aesthetics of this chair. Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980) was a Danish designer and cabinetmaker. He had a particular interest in different construction materials; especially steel which he considered a natural material with the same artistic fineness as other natural materials. Poul Kjaerholm was employed at Fritz Hansen for about a year, where he designed a number of noteworthy chair prototypes. In 1955 Poul Kjærholm initiated his collaboration with manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen, which lasted until Poul Kjærholm's death in 1980. In 1982, Fritz Hansen took over the production and sales of "The Kjærholm Collection", developed from 1951 to 1967, designs, which are logical to the minute detail with an aura of exclusivity. In 2007 Fritz Hansen added two new pieces to the Kjærholm Collection. Pieces that were never in production before, the PK8...
