Atlantis armchair by Mark Brazier-Jones,
The Atlantis armchair, designed by Mark Brazier-Jones, is a captivating piece of furniture that seamlessly blends historical motifs with rich materials. Crafted in 1988 in England, the chair’s design draws inspiration from grand French Empire furniture of the early nineteenth century, which often featured cast gilt bronze mounts derived from animal forms. Notably, the Atlantis armchair’s curved rear legs evoke the shape of sabres, a convention also found in Empire furniture.
Between 1989 and 1994, Mark Brazier-Jones created an exclusive edition of the Atlantis armchair, comprising 50 cast bronze chairs and 50 cast aluminium chairs. The version cast in aluminium is equally remarkable, showcasing the same exquisite design elements.
The Atlantis armchair stands as a collectible and functional work of art, embodying the designer’s sophisticated approach and interest in historical aesthetics.
