Solid Teak Danish Lounge Chair, Denmark 1950s

About the Item

The 1950s saw brilliant Danish designers and cabinetmakers working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored modern shapes and forms. These designers experimented with new materials and construction methods, but crucially, they all had a formal training, either as architects or as furniture makers. This sculptural lounge chair shows how successful these experiments were. Throughout the 1950s, Danish wood distributors were importing as many as 150 different kinds of woods annually. In addition to mahogany from Cuba, rosewood from Brazil, to name but a few, Danish Modern furniture also incorporated materials like rattan from Indonesia and goatskin from Nigeria. But certainly, foremost among these imported materials was teak. However, furniture makers typically couldn’t afford the cost, therefore, in the first half of the 20th century, they used teak only sparingly. The material defines this lounge chair’s qualities, such as being durable, waterproof, and easy to bend. Thanks to this, the wooden structure is of the highest quality and the expert skill of the cabinetmaker is very visible. The frame has numerous architectural solutions both visually and technically, such as the joinery and the metal support in the back. These solutions are all in service of the chair’s functionality and comfort. The back is in a permanently reclined position with a raised seat and wide armrests to provide a comfortable lounging position for the sitter. The removable, upholstered seat and back cushion are perfect additions to add more comfort, while also not shifting the focus from the teak structure. The modern and elegant look of this chair comes from the mixture of the brass fittings, the premium upholstery, and the beautiful teak wood. What brings together these materials, however, is the great craftsmanship of the Danish cabinetmaker. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Kay Fisker “Canton” Woven Wicker Lounge Chair for Robert Wengler, Denmark 1950s
By Kay Fisker, Robert Wengler
Located in Utrecht, NL
While Kay Fisker is considered a leading exponent of Danish Functionalism, his present design shows why he was also a great influence on the Danish housing culture. This model was famously brought to Denmark from China by Fisker and there manufactured by Robert Wengler. Having trained architects and designers such as Finn Juhl, Kay Fisker designed his furniture pieces with the greatest architectural precision and quality. This “Canton” is a one-of-a-kind design, with an immediately recognizable frame and wickerwork. The masterfully woven cane gives this chair an airy look, complimented by the loose, upholstered seat cushion that adds comfort and cosiness to complement the frame. From every angle, this chair is visually arresting; from the front to the sides and back, the curves and geometric lines provide plenty of visual interest. This chair has a distinct designer edge, with clear signs of a skilled architect. The straight lines are mainly in service of the structural stability, while the and the lower panel in the front are the creation of an equally skilled designer. The back is especially creative, as it flows down to form the armrests and then further down to the legs, creating balance between the curved and straight lines. Fisker, like many of his Danish contemporaries was highly skilled both as an architect and as a furniture designer, and the “Canton” is perhaps the best evidence of that. The manufacturer, Robert Wengler was a German craftsman who specialized in wicker furniture, and was appointed as a wicker maker to the Danish Crown in 1914. He was a Pioneer in working with rattan in the early 20th century and became the most skilful wicker-maker in Denmark. This chair is marked by his brand, R. Wengler. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some discolouration and marks of restoration on the cane. The lounge chair has been reupholstered recently in premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 33.46 in W x 37.59 in D x 38.18 in H; Seat height 18.5 in 85 cm W x 95.5 cm D x 97 cm H; Seat height 47 cm About the Designer: Kay Otto Fisker (born 14 February 1893 in Frederiksberg, died 21 June 1965) was a Danish architect and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was an exponent of a nationally shaped version of international functionalism. Fisker graduated from school in 1909 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture from 1909 to 1920, when he graduated as an architect. During his studies he was employed at Anton Rosen's architect's office from 1912, in Stockholm with Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund in 1916 and with Hack Kampmann in Copenhagen from 1918. In 1915, in collaboration with Aage Rafn...
