It was designed by Tove Kindt-Larsen in the 1940s and is very feminine in its expression. The lounge chair is handmade from rattan and is part of Sika-Design's exclusive ICONS collection, which represents design furniture created by renowned designers. With great respect and admiration for the original designs and in close collaboration with the descendants of these well-known furniture designers, we are happy to bring these icons back. The Tulip Lounge Chair was originally produced by Robert W. Tulip is handmade in sustainable Indonesian rattan by skilled wicker makers. Rattan is often compared to bamboo, but unlike bamboo, which is hollow, rattan is a solid material. Rattan is a remarkably strong and durable material, and therefore you get a unique piece of furniture that can last for generations. The frame of the chair is entirely crafted by hand from rattan with its ‘skin’ left intact. It is steamed to make it more pliable and then coaxed into shape, before being held in a jig as it cools. Each piece shows different natural characteristics of the rattan and exudes informal elegance. Rattan color variations, natural marks and blemishes and "tiger claws" from the hand bending process, give each piece its natural beauty.
