Tubular modernist lounge chair Germany 1960s

About the Item

Rare modernist tubular lounge chair by thus far unknown designer, Germany 1960s. This was purchase in an Amsterdam based apartment which was full of fifties and sixties furniture by Metz and Co. The owner told us the chair was from a German designer, but it could also be Dutch in our opinion. We have this chair already in our collection for almost 15 years and never found out who made it exactly. It surely is an amazing piece of high quality with of course similar details in the design by Gerrit Rietveld (beugel chair), Erich Dieckmann, JJP Oud and Marcel Breuer. The steel tubular frame is solid, which makes this chair very strong, and you understand the quality of it. This is only connected at the seating part and not at the bottom of the frame, which gives a very nice floating appearance to the design. But this also means the only 3 connections at the top, should be strong enough to keep the chair fully stable, which it is. So, you can imagine this design was very thought through. The rattan seat is done with full attention to detail with a very nice an unusual weaving pattern and the front and bottom. The rattan has a very nice patina from age but still remains in perfect condition. We did not clean the chrome purposely as we want the patina and age to remain visible for the new buyer, we can clean this upon request so it will look perfectly shiny again. In my opinion it fits the chairs character as well and is not directly necessary. A very nice collectors’ item for a modernist design collector.
