French Velvet Stool in the Style of Napoleon III and Fournier A.M.E.

About the Item

This important French stool or Ottoman, in the manner and style of Napoleon III and Fournier A.M.E, is an excellent testimony to the period. Made of carved wood, it displays an extraordinary mastery of carving. Its rope-like structure is a remarkable detail. Noteworthy are the feet that form a double rope knot, as well as the rope-shaped turned wooden border. These details demonstrate the attention to detail and craftsmanship employed in its creation. The ottoman seat, upholstered in red velvet, lends importance and royalty to the entire piece. This touch of elegance is further accentuated by the choice of velvet, which gives the product a sumptuous appearance. The combination of carved wood and red velvet creates a fascinating contrast, reflecting the distinctive style of the Napoleon III period. It is important to emphasise that this type of stool was created during the reign of Napoleon III by A.M.E. Fournier (well-known decorator), whose contribution is significant. The rope-shaped base is a characteristic element of this type of stool. Given its historical relevance, the stool or Ottoman can be attributed to the 19th-20th centuries. It is a piece that evokes the opulence and luxury of the Napoleon III period, representing a prestigious addition to your décor. In short, the important French stool or Ottoman, in the manner and style of Napoleon III and Fournier A.M.E., is a piece of great historical and artistic value. With its carved wooden frame in the shape of a rope, the feet forming a double knot and the red velvet seat, it is an excellent testimony to the period. Purchasing this stool will not only enrich your room with a historically significant piece, but will also add a touch of royalty and refinement to your décor. For comparison: A Fournier pouf à cordes is found in the Château de Compiègne and is illustrated in H. Hayward, World Furniture, London, 1965, p. 241, pl. 928, and in J.-M. Moulin, 'The furnishing of the Palace of Compiègne during the Second Empire', The Connoisseur, December 1978, p. 253. A gilded wooden stool of the same design was sold by the Earl of Rosebery from the collection of Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild, Mentmore, Sotheby's House sale, 18 May 1977, lot 10, while another pair was sold by the Earl and Countess of Perth, at Christies's, 18 April 1996, lot 44. Another gilt wooden stool of this type was also sold at Christie's, 2 May 1997, lot 156.
