About the Item

Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner, sectional sofa consisting of eight elements, model ´chromatic´, fabric, France, 1970 A postmodern design by Kwok Hoi Chan created in 1970 for Steiner. Design in the seventies was all about going beyond the strict conventions of modernism, with the exploration of the different qualities of materials, use of pop colors, with peculiar and symbolic appearances as the outcome. In the design world of the 1970s, it was commonplace to see sectional sofas featuring a soft, organic layout and rendered in the most vibrant colors. Noted designers such as Pierre Paulin, Olivier Mourgue, Mario Bellini, Rossi di Albizzate, Tito Agnoli, Verner Panton, Cini Boeri, Gaetano Pesce, and Joe Colombo, to name a few, contributed to this tradition. This seamless seating system consists of eight elements, which gives the opportunity to create different configurations. The fabric used to reupholster the elements is a bright blue color. The curvaceous construction of the element, accentuated by the vertical lining in the upholstery, evokes the image of a cascade. Maximum comfort is guaranteed by means of the thick seating cushions and the large seats. Kwok Hoi Chan (1920-1990) was an emblematic figure of international design who emigrated from Hong Kong to England and France. In France, he paired up with the Parisian manufacturer Steiner. Even though Kwok Hoi Chan was deeply involved in European and international design he has always stayed loyal to his Chinese origins. His furniture resembles an imaginary alphabet borrowed from Chinese calligraphy. His trademark is a suspended tubular frame which is combined with an organic shaped seating. Please note that we advise reupholstery before use. This item might contain some threadbare upholstery with loose seams and small stains. Reupholstery can be done before shipping by our experienced craftsmen and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier.
