Fine Quality Pair of Florentine Walnut and Bone Inlaid Savonarola X-Form Chairs
About the Item
A fine quality pair of Florentine walnut and bone inlaid Savonarola x-form chairs with Medici crest; each stunning chair with shaped back crest rail with inlaid royal heraldry centering the Medici coat of arms; the whole with geometric and marquetry wooden and bone inlay; the removable back over plank armrests above a pegged folding x-form body all raised on sleigh feet; the Savonarola chair is fashioned after those favored by residents of 16th century Venice. Having an x-form base and a number of transverse curved supports crossing beneath the seat and rising to support the arms and back. They are often heavily adorned with inlay or intricate carvings. The name itself comes from Girolamo Savonarola, a friar active in renaissance Florence.
