Pair of Antique Green Painted Chairs - 3 pairs available
Located in London, GB
This listing is for a pair. There are three pairs available (set of six). A charming pair of English green painted and intricately decorated 'ribbon-back' chairs. Why we like them Their delicate and unusual shape, with boldly splayed back legs and intricate backs, alluding to 'The Sun King' Louis XIV, together with the rare, sumptuous green 'japanning', emblematic of the early neoclassical era in English interior design, make these superbly decorative chairs very attractive and desirable. This model with its distinct wheel-backs is very similar to a set of cartouche wheel-back chairs photographed by Edwin Smith in ‘The Balcony Room’ at Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire, in 1971. In 1774, Thomas Chippendale supplied 'green and white japanned' ‘Star back’ chairs for Paxton House, Scotland (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, p. 271 and fig. 164). Henry Hill of Marlborough also used a similar pattern for chairs supplied to Thomas Mansel at Penrice Castle, Glamorgan, in 1778 (illustrated Lucy Wood, The Upholstered Furniture in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Volume II, Singapore, 2008, p. 628, fig. 394). Although displaying similarities with a number of other fine examples, a firm attribution for this pattern remains elusive and requires further research. A set of twelve...

18th Century English Neoclassical Pair of Chairs, circa 1780
By Mayhew & Ince, Robert Adam
Located in London, GB
A very fine pair of late 18th century, George III period mahogany hall chairs of the rare neoclassical oval fan-back design, emblematic of the work of the London firm of William Ince and John Mayhew. English, circa 1780. Each having an oval reeded medallion back centred by a recessed vacant oval armorial cartouche, above a solid compass seat with moulded seatrail, raised on turned tapering fore legs, terminating in bulb feet, and sabre rear supports. With their distinctive medallion-shaped reeded backs, the present hall chairs are designed in the George III ‘Roman’ fashion, introduced in the late 1770s. This design is found on a set of armorial chairs...
